What submerged arc welding flux is+
Submerged arc welding flux is a granular mineral consumable fed ahead of the SAW wire so the arc burns entirely beneath a blanket of flux. The flux shields the molten pool from the atmosphere, shapes the bead, controls the slag detachment and — depending on its formulation — influences the chemistry and toughness of the deposited weld metal. It is always used as a system with a specific SAW wire: the flux alone has no classification, and the flux-wire combination is what a procedure qualifies. Fabricators use it wherever long, repeatable, high-deposition welds are made mechanically rather than by hand.
Agglomerated and fused flux+
Fused flux is melted and crushed, giving a hard, glassy, chemically homogeneous granule that resists moisture pick-up and handles high current well, but that cannot carry significant alloying or deoxidising additions. Agglomerated (bonded) flux is mixed and baked at lower temperature, which allows alloying elements and deoxidisers to be included and generally supports better toughness and mechanical property control — at the cost of greater moisture sensitivity, so storage and any re-drying instructions from the manufacturer matter. The choice follows the procedure and the property requirement, not a general preference.
Neutral, active and alloy flux+
A neutral flux produces weld metal chemistry that does not change significantly with arc voltage, which is why it is normally selected for multi-pass welding on thick sections where consistency across many passes is essential. An active flux contains controlled additions of deoxidisers such as manganese and silicon, which improve resistance to porosity on mill scale or less-clean plate and generally suit single-pass welding — but its deposit chemistry does shift with voltage, so voltage control becomes part of the procedure. Alloy fluxes transfer alloying elements into the deposit and are used with specific wires for low-alloy applications. Basicity index is the usual shorthand for where a flux sits between good weld-metal cleanliness and toughness on one side and easier operability and slag release on the other.
