Orange Essential Oil — Food Grade

Orange essential oil is cold pressed from the peel of Citrus sinensis and is dominated by d-limonene, with the minor aldehyde fraction carrying most of the recognisable juicy character. It is supplied as a single-fold oil or in folded and terpeneless forms with concentrated flavour strength and different solubility behaviour.

Single-fold, five-fold and terpeneless oils differ in flavour strength, solubility in a water-based system and oxidative stability. Substituting one for another without redosing either under-flavours the batch or introduces ringing and separation in a beverage. State the fold your formulation was approved on.

Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) and Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) oils are different in both profile and application, as are the peel and blossom-derived oils of the same species. Confirm species and plant part rather than relying on the word orange.

Material sold as Orange Essential Oil varies with the Citrus sinensis crop, the growing region, the season and whether it is distilled, cold pressed, folded, terpeneless or reconstituted. Two lots meeting the same broad description can smell measurably different, so evaluate against your own retained standard rather than against a description.

The commercially meaningful comparison is the gas chromatography profile of the key constituents, together with optical rotation, refractive index and specific gravity. Ask for the profile of the exact lot offered and match it to the profile your finished product was approved on.

Store in full, tightly closed, chemically compatible containers, cool, away from light and oxygen ingress, and use rapidly once opened. Oxidation and evaporative loss change the sensory profile before any analytical limit is exceeded, so confirm the storage condition, declared shelf life and re-analysis interval against the documentation issued for the exact lot supplied.
