HEDP is the most widely used phosphonate in industrial water treatment and the usual first choice for calcium carbonate scale control in cooling systems. It works at threshold levels, holds up reasonably well against chlorine, and chelates metal ions, which is why it also appears in cleaning and metal-treatment formulations. Its limits are calcium tolerance in very hard water and the phosphorus it adds to the discharge.
