What dipropylene glycol does+

DPG earns its place in a formulation because it dissolves in both water and most organic phases, evaporates slowly and carries very little odour of its own. In cleaners and coatings that combination makes it a coupling solvent that keeps a surfactant, a resin and water in one stable phase without flashing off during open-time. In fragrance work it is used as the diluent that carries the oil, which is exactly why odour becomes the specification a buyer argues about. In unsaturated polyester production it is reacted into the backbone as a glycol rather than used as a solvent at all.
