Screw and Barrel Cleaning — When Purging Is No Longer Enough

Purging removes melt; cleaning removes deposit. Once a purge cycle stops clearing black specks after two full sequences, the carbon is baked onto the screw root or a barrel dead zone, and no further purge will remove it — you are now paying for purge compound to hide a maintenance job. At that point pull the screw, clean it hot with brass or copper tooling and a chemical soak cleaner, and inspect flight wear and the check ring while it is out.
The decision sequence
- Two failed purge cycles. Log the shots or kilograms lost. If specks persist, stop purging.
- Pull the screw at temperature. Deposits soften; a cold pull turns carbonised polymer into a chisel job that scores the flights.
- Never use steel tools on the flight surfaces. Brass scrapers, copper gauze and non-metallic pads only. A scratch in the hard chrome or nitrided layer becomes the next black-speck generator within weeks.
- Chemical soak for the stubborn areas. A dedicated polymer-decomposition cleaner or a caustic soak, depending on the resin, applied off the machine and rinsed thoroughly. Confirm the metallurgy tolerates the chemistry — caustic attacks aluminium tooling.
- Measure while it is out. Flight outside diameter, barrel bore, check ring clearance. Wear beyond the manufacturer's limit will keep producing shot-to- shot inconsistency however clean the machine is.
What actually causes recurring specks
Recurring contamination is almost always one of four things, and each has a different fix: worn flights holding a stagnant film; a dead zone at the nozzle, adaptor or screen changer; residence time too long for the resin at the running temperature; or degraded regrind entering with the virgin feed. Increasing purge frequency treats none of them. Establish which one applies before buying more consumables.
Preventive routine that pays
- Purge and inspect on a fixed schedule tied to production hours, not to complaints.
- Pull and clean the screw at planned intervals set by resin aggressiveness — more often for PVC, flame-retardant and highly filled compounds.
- Protect during shutdown: purge out degrading resins, and leave the barrel filled with a stable polymer or purge compound.
- Keep a log of purge kilograms per changeover. A rising trend is the earliest measurable signal that a screw pull is due.
