Mould Care — Cleaning, Release and Corrosion Protection

A mould fails for three reasons that mould-care chemistry can prevent: deposit on the cavity surface, blocked vents, and corrosion during storage. Treat them as three different products. Mould cleaners remove plasticiser bloom, additive plate-out and release residue between runs; release agents are a production aid that must be matched to any downstream decoration; rust preventives are a storage product applied after cleaning and removed before the next run. Using a release agent as a substitute for cleaning is the most common way a cosmetic tool loses its finish.
Choosing a release agent without creating a downstream defect
The question is never "which release works best" but "what happens to the part afterwards".
- Part will be painted, printed, bonded or welded. Use a paintable, silicone- free release. Silicone transfer is the single most common cause of paint fisheyes and adhesive failure, and it migrates around a plant on gloves, air lines and packaging.
- Part is decorative and untreated. Semi-permanent or silicone release is acceptable and gives the longest run between applications.
- Deep draw, thin wall, textured surface. Semi-permanent systems cure to the tool and hold for many cycles; aerosols reapplied every shot cause build-up in the texture.
- Food contact or medical. Require the declaration in writing before sampling, not after.
Cleaning and vent maintenance
Plate-out is deposit from additive packages — stabilizers, lubricants, flame retardants — condensing on cool cavity steel. It returns on a predictable cycle, so clean on schedule. Use a cleaner rated for the tool steel and any surface coating; solvent aggressive enough to strip cured semi-permanent release will also attack some coatings. Vents block with the same deposit and with degraded gas; blocked vents show up as burn marks and short shots long before anyone inspects the vent land, so include vent cleaning in the same routine rather than treating it as a separate repair.
Storage protection
Every tool leaving the press should be cleaned, dried and coated with a rust preventive matched to the storage period: a light displacing oil for days, a waxy or film-forming preventive for months. Specify whether the preventive must be removed before the next run — a film that flashes off at process temperature saves a cleaning step but must be confirmed against cosmetic requirements. Humidity in an unconditioned tool store is what actually drives the choice, so measure it once rather than guessing.
