W14-ANTIOX-ECO — Antioxidants for Plastics: Industrial Ecosystem
1. What problem do antioxidants solve?
They protect polymers from thermal-oxidative degradation during processing (primary — hindered phenolics, restricted amines) and during long-term service (secondary — phosphites, thioesters). Without them, melt viscosity drops, colour drifts and mechanical properties degrade.
2. Which industries use them?
Every polyolefin converter running high-temperature or long-residence-time processes: film, pipe, cable, geomembrane, automotive under-hood, wire & cable, recycled-content compounders.
3. Which processes consume them?
Compounding, extrusion (film, sheet, pipe, cable), injection with long residence time, and any process using rPO / rPET where oxidative history is uncertain.
4. Which products in Allzone connect to them?
- Additive masterbatches (AO packages on PE / PP / PET carriers)
- Combination MBs with UV, processing aids, thermal stabilisers
5. How does Allzone bridge them into a decision?
By connecting the AO package to the stage of degradation the buyer is trying to prevent — processing, service life, or both.
6. When NOT to investigate an antioxidant
- When the failure is photo-oxidation (sunlight) — this is a UV problem.
- When degradation comes from hydrolysis (PET, PA) — a drying / hydrolytic-stabiliser answer.
- When shear damage dominates — a processing-aid or screw-design answer.
7. What buyers get wrong
- Adding one AO and calling the system "stabilised" — primary + secondary usually work as a pair.
- Over-dosing, causing blooming or discolouration.
- Ignoring interactions with other additives and metal contaminants.
8. What should the buyer investigate next?
Whether their degradation is processing, service, or both — and whether the current AO package is balanced primary/secondary at a defensible loading.
