Sodium Bentonite
Sodium bentonite is the swelling form of smectite clay, in which sodium is the dominant exchangeable cation. It absorbs many times its own weight in water and expands into a thixotropic gel, and that single behaviour is what buyers are actually purchasing: viscosity and yield in a fluid, low permeability in a barrier, and green strength in a bonded sand or pellet. Some material is naturally sodium-rich and some is sodium-activated from a calcium base; both are presentations of this material rather than separate products. Allzone quotes this material per enquiry: grade, packing, origin, documentation and Incoterm are decided in your quotation, not fixed by this page.

Technical & procurement detail
What sodium bentonite does in a process+
In drilling and civil works it builds viscosity and suspends solids while sealing the bore wall; in barriers and liners its swelling gives low permeability; in foundry moulding sand it provides green and dry strength as the clay bond; in pelletising it binds fines into handleable pellets. Which grade suits your duty depends on its declared swelling, yield and rheology figures for that grade, and is confirmed by trial on your own system.
What decides the grade you actually need+
The duty comes first, because gel strength, yield, swelling index and green-strength behaviour matter in different proportions for a drilling fluid, a barrier, a foundry sand and a pelletising binder. Then particle size and the percentage passing your stated mesh, moisture, whether a natural or activated presentation is acceptable in your specification, and the documentation you require decide the grade quoted.
Sodium bentonite against the rest of the clay family+
Calcium bentonite is the low-swelling form used for adsorption and clarification and has its own canonical page. Sodium montmorillonite is the mineralogical name for this same material, not a separate product. Drilling grade, foundry grade, pelletising grade, liner grade, granular and powder presentations, sodium-activated material and any mesh specification are all handled inside this record and are never published as separate pages. The generic Bentonite record on this catalogue remains the entry point for buyers who have not yet settled the sodium-versus-calcium question.
Specification conventions and how to state yours+
Suppliers report particle size in different conventions — mesh, percentage passing a stated mesh, micron top cut, or D50 from a named measurement method — and the numbers are not interchangeable between conventions. State the convention your specification uses, along with the property window you actually need, and comparison is made like for like. Moisture, pH, bulk density, swelling behaviour, heavy metals and any documentation requirement are reviewed the same way, against producer data for the grade offered.
What this page does not state+
This page asserts no purity, assay, mesh, micron, D50, brightness, swelling capacity, moisture, pH, bulk density, surface area, heavy-metal limit, origin, mine, packing, minimum quantity, certification, approval, availability, lead time or price. Every commercially meaningful value is taken from producer documentation for the exact grade offered and confirmed in writing before order.
Sourcing and origin+
Allzone sources this material through producer channels and quotes it per enquiry. Origin, mining location and processing location are selected against your technical requirement, quantity, documentation need and destination, and are stated in the offer rather than fixed by this page. Mineral powders have low value density, so freight, discharge point and packaging format move landed cost as much as the material price; quotations are compared delivered to your plant.
Documentation supplied with an offer+
Technical data sheet, safety data sheet and certificate of analysis for the exact grade offered are requested from the producer and shared with the quotation. Mineral powders create airborne dust during transfer and bagging, and respirable crystalline silica content varies by material and by grade, so it is treated as an SDS and workplace-controls question for the specific grade rather than a figure published here. Where a declaration matters to your application — food contact, feed, potable water, cosmetic or regulatory — it is confirmed for that grade and intended use rather than assumed from this page.
How Allzone quotes this+
Send the material or system it goes into, the process it runs on, the function you need it to perform, the property window your specification calls for in your own convention, the annual and per-shipment quantity, the packaging format your intake can receive, the documentation required per shipment and the delivery province or port. Several materials can be listed in one enquiry and reviewed together rather than split into separate requests.
Frequently asked questions
Does Allzone publish a price for sodium bentonite?+
No. Price, minimum quantity, origin, packing and lead time depend on the grade, the volume and the destination, and are confirmed at quotation. Nothing on this page is an offer.
Which grades or presentations can be quoted?+
Natural sodium presentation, Sodium-activated presentation, Powder and granular presentations, Duty-specific documentation are handled inside this single product record. Grades, mesh specifications and applications of one material are not published as separate pages; the grade offered and its published data are confirmed in the quotation.
What documentation is available for sodium bentonite?+
Technical data sheet, safety data sheet and certificate of analysis for the exact grade offered are requested from the producer and shared with the quotation. Mineral powders create airborne dust during transfer and bagging, and respirable crystalline silica content varies by material and by grade, so it is treated as an SDS and workplace-controls question for the specific grade rather than a figure published here. Can sodium bentonite be supplied into Ontario and the GTA?+
Delivery and logistics into Ontario, Quebec and the rest of Canada are reviewed per enquiry alongside the rest of the offer. We publish no stock, inventory or delivery-window guarantee on this page.
