Fluid and stable are opposite instincts+
Adding superplasticizer makes a mix flow; it also makes it easier for aggregate to sink and water to rise. VMA is what allows a mix to be both highly fluid and cohesive, which is the entire basis of self-consolidating concrete.
Surface defects come from stability, not vibration+
Bug holes, colour mottling and aggregate lines in architectural precast usually trace back to a mix that was not stable during placement. Producers who fight surface quality often get more from rheology control than from more vibration.
Robustness against water variation+
A VMA-stabilised mix tolerates small water and moisture variations better than a knife-edge superplasticized mix. In a plant with variable aggregate moisture, that robustness is worth more than the last unit of flow.
Specification options+
Working properties are configurable options within this canonical product, not separate products. Depending on the family, that can include grade, viscosity, mix ratio, pot life and demould time, hardness, colour, particle size or fibre length, and pack format. Often yes — the two do opposite jobs and are usually dosed together in self-consolidating and architectural mixes.
