Core Selection Factors
Grade differences can affect dispersion, surface finish, processing behaviour, mechanical performance and final-product consistency.
The following factors drive grade selection. Each is described qualitatively; numerical thresholds depend on the specific formulation and are confirmed against supplier data.
- Coated vs uncoated: surface treatment (commonly stearate) affects dispersion, moisture pickup and compatibility with polyolefin systems. Uncoated grades are typical for aqueous and some PVC systems.
- Mesh and particle size: higher mesh means finer particles. Finer particles generally improve surface finish and thin-wall performance but change rheology and can raise processing torque.
- D50 and top cut: median particle size and the coarse tail together determine surface finish, filtration behaviour and abrasion on tooling. Both must be specified — D50 alone is insufficient.
- Brightness and whiteness: relevant where colour or opacity matter; method of measurement must be stated when comparing suppliers.
- Moisture: affects extrusion stability, foam formation and, in some polymers, hydrolysis. Maximum moisture is a normal supply specification.
- Dispersion: influenced by particle size, coating and carrier system; poor dispersion shows up as agglomerates, gels or surface defects.
- Polymer or process compatibility (carrier compatibility): PP, PE, PVC, TPE, adhesives, sealants, coatings and paper each have different acceptable ranges for the factors above.
- Loading target: the proportion of filler in the formulation. Higher loading reduces cost per kilogram but changes stiffness, impact, flow and surface finish. The workable ceiling is application dependent.
- Effect on stiffness, surface finish and processing: finer, well-dispersed, appropriately coated grades typically preserve surface quality; coarser or poorly dispersed grades can cause visible defects.
