Product overview

Canola is rapeseed bred to be low in erucic acid and low in glucosinolates — the two properties that turned an industrial oilseed into a food oil and a usable protein meal. That definition matters commercially, because it is what separates canola from generic rapeseed in a contract.

A crusher buys on three numbers: oil content, moisture and admixture (dockage). Oil content sets the yield; moisture above specification both dilutes the purchase and creates heating risk in store; admixture is inert material you are paying oilseed prices for. Green seed count matters too, because chlorophyll carries through into the crude oil and raises refining cost.

Seed destined for crushing is not the same conversation as seed destined for birdseed or industrial use — state the destination process so the right quality band is quoted.

Canadian supply context

Canola is one of Canada's largest field crops, grown across the prairie provinces, and both the seed and its processed products move in international trade. Domestic crushing capacity is substantial, which is why oil and meal are exportable alongside raw seed.

Seasonality is real: quality and availability follow the harvest, and green seed levels in a difficult year can affect the whole crop position. We quote against the crop position we can actually deliver.

Available against confirmed programme and segregation requirements.

High-oleic types

Specialty crush programmes, subject to confirmed demand.

Key specifications

Indicative ranges for the commodity. Lot values are confirmed on the certificate of analysis for each shipment.

Admixture / dockage
Maximum agreed per contract
Erucic acid
Low, per the canola definition (typically under 2 % of fatty acids)
